Known as the "universal antioxidant", Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) can go anywhere in the body because of its solubility in both water and fat.  It conserves and prolongs the life of vitamins C and E, increasing their effectiveness.  ALA is also an excellent mental detoxifier, particularly for mercury and cadmium.  We are exposed to these toxic metals daily through car exhaust and cigarette smoke.  Alpha-lipoic acid  binds them and neutralizes them for excretion. It is a fat soluble metabolic antioxidant.  It is a potent free radical quencher and aids Vitamins C and E in their antioxidant activities.  Vitamins C and E are added as complementary, synergistic  antioxidants.

 Alpha-lipoic acid exists in our every cell and tissue and is very effective in lowering blood sugar and preventing diabetic complications -- especially cardiovascular and neurological problems.  It also strengthens immunity, improves energy in cells, protects brain cells against excitotoxicity.  A number of studies have shown that it can correct blood sugar in type 2 diabetics and improve or even eliminate insulin need in insulin-dependent diabetics.
